Some time ago, I had the opportunity to scan a collection of authentic Nordic runestones in Lund, Sweden. These stones, steeped in Viking history, were carefully captured using high-resolution photogrammetry, preserving every detail, crack, and texture of these ancient artifacts. Standing among the stones, you can truly feel the weight of history – a tangible connection to the Viking Age.
After capturing the scans, I brought the raw 3D data into Blender for meticulous post-processing. This involved retopologizing each mesh to reduce vertices, cleaning up imperfections, and optimizing geometry to make the models fully game-ready. The result is a collection of low-poly, Nanite-enabled meshes with 4K PBR textures, keeping the fine details of the original stones while being efficient for real-time applications in Unreal Engine 5.
These runestones are perfect for a variety of creative projects:
-
Game environments: RPGs, survival, open-world, or fantasy landscapes
-
Virtual production and cinematics: Historical accuracy meets digital storytelling
-
Educational content and museum exhibits: Bring Viking history to life in AR/VR
-
Architectural visualizations: Add authentic, historical elements to outdoor scenes
Capturing and processing these stones was a labor-intensive process, but the result is a set of authentic, high-quality assets that save developers and artists countless hours. Every stone preserves its unique character, giving any project a touch of historical realism and depth.
Whether you’re a game developer, a virtual production artist, or an educator looking to bring history into digital space, these real Nordic runestones from Lund provide a unique opportunity to incorporate genuine Viking artifacts into your work.
Experience Viking history like never before – digitally preserved, optimized, and ready to use in your next project.
